George Riddell

1836 - 1915

Captain George William Hutton Riddell rode his first winner, Young Napier, at Tipperary in 1855. He bought the horse after the race (from a brother officer) and went on to win further races on him.

He rode frequently in Ireland and there won the Dublin Metropolitan Steeplechase for Sir Edward Hutchinson on the mare Chance.

He had a good win on returning to England with his regiment, landing the 1863 Grand Military Gold Cup on Rifleman. In this race he just beat the Grand National winner, Jealousy.

One of the better horses he owned was Bandana on which he won six races out of eight.

Another good race he won was the Thirsk Gold Cup, wearing his own colours - violet and black cap - on Roscrea.

Captain Riddell appeared for the last time in public at the 1874 National Hunt Meeting at Aylesbury, when he rode Minster in the National Hunt Steeplechase. It was an unhappy farewell, with Minster falling and the Captain breaking his collar-bone.

Captain Riddell died at his home, Bragborough Hall, Rugby, on Wednesday, 10 February 1915. His funeral took place that Saturday afternoon at Welton Churchyard, the coffin being conveyed on a farm wagon attended by six old employees, who acted as pallbearers

He was 78 and had been ill for a week before his death. He was born at Wyndthorpe Hall, Lincoln, in 1836 and educated at Rugby.
