The son of an interior decorator and born at Kimberley, Nottingham on June 13, 1936, Peter John Robinson was apprenticed to Harry Wragg for five years and rode his first winner, Prince Yaki, at Birmingham on 23 June 1953 and was champion apprentice just three years later with 46 winners.

When, in August 1969, Teddy Lambton handed in his trainer's licence, Peter retired from the saddle to take over the running of the Fitzroy Stables.
