Anthony Frederick Robinson’s only win came on Birdman II in an error strewn Brinkley Novices’ Chase at Southwell on April 5, 1969. Of the eight starters, one refused and five fell, including the runner-up Pennine, ridden by Roddy Reid, leaving Birdman II to win by a distance. Pennine was remounted and still managed to finish ahead of Yankee Bet, with Red Weaver in the saddle. Given the level of grief during the race, perhaps it was as well that the stewards had ordered that the open ditch be omitted, due of the state of the ground.
Birdman II had himself fallen, with Tony aboard, on his previous start at Market Rasen in December 1968.
Two days after their Southwell success, the pair finished second, beaten six lengths, behind Tommy Stack on Tamorn at Market Rasen on Easter Monday.
They had three more goes together, finishing fifth at Leicester, seventh at Huntingdon and unseating rider at Fakenham in the Holt Handicap Chase on Whit Monday, May 26, 1969. That was Tony’s final ride. He did not renew his licence the following season.
