Jamie Railton

Jamie Railton is a successful former professional jump jockey who has gone on to forge an even more successful career in buying and selling bloodstock.James Andrew Railton was born on December 5, 1967. He began his racing career as an amateur rider and gained his first success on Fireworks Night, trained by Nicky Henderson and owned by John Rose, in an amateur riders’ novices’ chase at Market Rasen on Saturday, May 9, 1987.

He went on to ride 225 winners spread over ten seasons. Although he didn’t win any of the big races, he nonetheless rode some good horses including Pegwell Bay, Lord Gyllene, Time Won’t Wait and Moorish.

He bowed out on a winning note when scoring on

Jamaican Flight at Market Rasen on Saturday, May 31, 1997, thus providing perfect symmetry, having ridden his first winner at the Lincolnshire track ten years earlier. After his final success, John Rose, Market Rasen’s patron and for whom Jamie had ridden his first winner, presented him with a bottle of champagne and two china mugs – one each for his first and last winner. He was then carried shoulder-high by his weighing room colleagues and showered in champagne, Grand Prix style, by Andrew Thornton.

“I count myself lucky to have finished all in one piece,” he said. “There have been a lot of highs and lows but it has all been character building.”

Although he had ridden as a jump jockey, his passion had always been in Flat racing and bloodstock. After several years successfully pin-hooking foals to sell as yearlings, and spending time on American stud farms to further his knowledge, he set up Jamie Railton Bloodstock in 2000.

Since then, Jamie has acquired a reputation for being a well-respected professional with a comprehensive knowledge of the bloodstock markets. He has been a regular top 10 consignor at leading bloodstock auctions such as Tattersalls, DBS and Arqana.

Bloodstock sold by Jamie has also performed at the highest level on the racecourse, with Group 1 winners in USA, Australia, France, Hong Kong and Italy, plus stakes winners in Japan and Ireland, while on the domestic front, he purchased Maze, winner of Royal Ascot’s Chesham Stakes.

His top performers include Presvis and Wootton Bassett, the latter having become a successful stallion, whose offspring include European champion Almanzor, winner of the Irish Champion Stakes and Qipco Champion Stakes in 2016.
