Dan Ruttle

Article by Chris Pitt

Irishman Dan Ruttle was active in the 1930s and in the immediate post-war years. He rode Silver Fame in the 1946 Grand National, only to fall at the 19th fence.

At Doncaster on December 7, 1946, he shrugged off a broken bone in his foot, incurred in a fall earlier on the card, to win the last race on 2/1 favourite Star Song. Later that season he rode a double at Cheltenham’s April fixture, highlighted by the victory of Battling Pedulas in the Holman Cup Chase. He finished the campaign with another double, this time at Newport on the last day of the season.

He rode 66/1 chance Rearmament in the 1948 Grand National, falling at the 14th fence.

Having hung up his boots and saddle in 1954, Dan made a brief return for the 1957/58 season, in which he rode just one winner, Pitlochry, for Alec Kerr in a Hurst Park selling chase on March 14, 1958.

Dan Ruttle died in County Kildare on October 12, 1964, aged 56.
