Learning Experience
All students at Glen Allen Elementary read the book Fenway and Hattie. Ms. Stoner's third grade class launched a school-wide community service project to collect donations supporting the Henrico County Animal Shelter. Students had diverse roles in this event which fostered creativity, media literacy, community outreach, and effective communication. Students incorporated Fenway into morning announcements; produced engaging media content, including videos, presentations, and interviews; enhanced the school's book website; and fostered student participation through a book-themed Padlet.
What did the student(s) learn about this experience:
"I know I grew as a collaborator because I worked with classmates to construct an answer box for Fenway and Hattie. This skill is important because if there is something I don’t know how to do then I can talk and learn. I could get better at this skill if I work more with others. Other places I use this skill are at swimming, home, and in the neighborhood. In the future I could use this skill at my job, like discussing stocks.” - Minette
What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:
“This has been an amazing project. These third graders have improved their communication and collaboration skills. They were able to encourage others to read and discuss what they read. They lead a donation drive and discovered the what an impact we all can have on the world. I know they will continue to grow as global citizens!” - Jessica Stoner
