Learning Experience

Third grade students connected their Water Cycle Unit to the real world problem of the water crisis. After reading “The Water Princess” students researched about the importance of water and how people are impacted globally by lack of resources. Students learned about what it takes to create a water filtration system in these areas of need. They were then taken through the design process to work collaboratively to create a water filter. A representative from the James River Association reviewed each design and chose a winner to be represented at Henrico 21.

What did the students learn about this experience:

"I learned that it is not just the entire country of Africa impacted by the water crisis, but many more places. It costs thousands of dollars and many months just to build a well." - Dakota

"We learned how the water crisis is a big problem and we want people to raise money to help them build a well. Georgie Badiel shared her story about the water crisis and her town to let people know how big of a problem it is." -Demi

What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:

"It was amazing to see the connection students made from a global issue to our own local water issues in the James River. It was also really cool to see the love students have for the main character in "The Water Princess", Princess Gie Gie. They were able to see her as a real person through research and learning about her foundation. Their awareness grew so much during this unit. They really wanted to make a change and help those suffering from the water crisis.
