Learning Experience
Students from two 2nd grade classes collaborated on a project that reflected student agency, community outreach, collaboration, and communication. Each student selected three different types of communication, researched, and interviewed an adult about how they use communication in their career. Students created a nonfiction book in Book Creator that showcased what they learned as well as nonfiction text features. Next, 2nd graders collaborated with FCCLA club members from Pocahontas Middle School to share their books and create a fiction book together that demonstrated their understanding of the parts of a story. Lastly, students shared their nonfiction AND fiction books with their parents at a showcase in the school’s cafeteria.
What did the student(s) learn about this experience:
"It helped me learn more types of communication. Some I can use with people with disabilities." - Lizzie
"Communications both past and present are invaluable." - Hugh
"I used communication skills to help me learn about communication." - Charlie
What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:
"Students were able to use their critical thinking skills to drive deeper into learning in a fun and creative way! They had so much fun creating, sharing, and presenting!" - Judy Wash, 2nd Grade Teacher
