Henrico Learner Profile (HLP) 6C Focus

5th Grade - ELA/Digital Learning

SOL/Standard -

5.1 The student will use effective communication skills in a variety of settings.

Learning Experience

Students will first step inside the world of Amazon and take Virtual Video Tours to learn about the people and technology that make Amazon what it is today including the process of how items are packaged and shipped from start to finish. Students will then work collaboratively in groups of 3-4 to plan, design, and build a container that will fit in the pony envelope (large manila envelope) that will ensure the candy canes do not get crushed or broken as they travel between the 2 schools. Students must use at least 3 different materials from the classroom (meaning no one can just wrap their candy canes in bubble wrap and be done). The container must be big enough to hold 5 candy canes and small enough to fit in a pony envelope (large manila envelope).

What did the student(s) learn about this experience:

"Opening the packages was a sweet surprise." - Chase

"Even though it was hard to stick with the budget, it was fun to see how all of our packages turned out." - Daniel

What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:

"The value in projects like Henrico 21 extends beyond classroom learning.  Students gain essential skills in collaboration and critical thinking.  In turn, these skills carry over into their everyday lives" - Mrs. Livesay
