Learning Experience

Third grade students learned about the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome, China, and Egypt. They also learned about how these countries' contributions have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government, sports, inventions, calendar, and written language. Students then curated an “artifact” for an ancient cultures museum, using the design thinking process, to showcase contributions of a selected ancient culture.

Using green screen technology and WeVideo, students made a video showcasing their artifact. In the video, they narrated it to explain the ancient culture it highlighted, as well as how those contributions still impact our world today. They also explained how they curated their artifact.

Students then opened up the “museum” for others to visit during the school day. As museum visitors approached artifacts, the museum curators were there to provide information on how their artifact showcased contributions of the selected ancient culture and how those contributions still impact our world today. Visitors could also view the video that corresponded with select artifacts. Curators walked visitors through their process for selecting materials, designing and creating their artifact, and how they made growth in thinking creatively through the process.

What did the student(s) learn about this experience:

“My experience was good because I learned a lot about the Parthenon that I didn’t already know. I learned more about craftsmanship, and I also used teamwork because I needed some help from my classmates to make my artifact.” Reeva

“I had to work through hard challenges, and I learned things about my artifact that I didn’t already know. It was really fun working on that project.” Sadie

What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:

"The Echos of Antiquity Museum project was a wonderful experience for my class.  Each student reflected on their learning of ancient civilizations and their contributions to our world. They thought critically and creatively to create a model of a selected contribution.  Students developed communication skills by sharing their project and experience with our school community during a museum exhibition.  The entire class was engaged and enthusiastic during the whole process!  Everyone loved it!  A few students even said, 'Can we have another museum?!'"- Katie Nolan
