4th Grade - Computer Science
SOL/Standard - 4.1 The student will construct sets of step-by-step instructions (algorithms) both independently and collaboratively
4.2 The student will construct programs to accomplish a task as a means of creative expression using a block or text based programming language, both independently and collaboratively
4.3 The student will analyze, correct, and improve (debug) an algorithm that includes sequencing, events, loops and variables.
4.4 The student will create a plan as part of the iterative design process, both independently and collaboratively using strategies such as pair programming
Learning Experience
Students worked through 3 to 4 self-paced coding lessons in Scratch. Through the power of coding, they then applied what they learned to create their own vision for a video game or animation and turn it into a reality! Coding requires both critical thinking and creative thinking. They have to synthesize technical processes that they have already learned in order to create their own project.
What did the student(s) learn about this experience:
"Coding in Scratch let me be creative and make cool and fun things. I would like to code more creations in the future." - Bella
What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:
"Igniting students creative passions while teaching them a skill as valuable as coding is the life-ready, perfect storm." - Shane Abinette
Additional Pictures, Media & Artifacts
Students presented their work
Every project was unique and student- driven
Some students chose to work together
Students helped each other revise their code
