Unleashing the power of Energy Heroes!

Henrico Learner Profile (HLP) 6C Focus

Fifth Grade - Science

SOL/Standard - 5.9  The student will investigate and understand that the conservation of energy resources is important.

Learning Experience

Fifth grade students applied the information they learned during their conservation of energy unit (5.9) to help create a conservation plan for Chamberlayne Elementary. Students conducted energy audits in different areas around the school to see how energy is used. They then created a conservation plan for the school, applying what they learned about renewable energy sources, and energy conservation.

Developing the HLP skill of Global Citizen, the students used digital graphic design tools to create and distribute TIP sheets to be displayed in classrooms and common areas. These TIP sheets identified ways that students and teachers can save energy based on the energy audit that was conducted, as well as, the information they learned from the unit. Students collaborated to create commercials that will be aired with the morning announcements, referring to the TIP sheets they made.

Finally, students created and will hand out TIP sheets at H21 to help our Henrico community with applicable ways to save energy at home. Students reflected on their growth as learners through feedback and application of their energy conservation plan.
