Learning Experience
To highlight critical thinking skills in math, students created a story problem and illustrated it based on a math fact that equaled 10 or 12. Students were given the opportunity to use addition or subtraction. Using Book Creator, they created a book with these problems that the whole first grade team can use to review problem solving during math warm ups and number talks. When developing the book as a class they decided how the layout would look so that it could be utilized by others to work on these skills. Students also showed off their reading, writing, and editing skills in order to have the problem make sense and then record themselves reading their story problem.
What did the student(s) learn about this experience:
"We need critical thinking skills so we can learn things before we grow up and do our jobs." - Leighton, 1st Grade
"And we need to ask good questions!" -Amiyah, 1st grade
What did the teacher enjoy about this experience:
"I enjoyed collaborating with our ILC to really engage my students in this process. They enjoyed being able to create what they wanted, and I loved seeing what they were able to come up with on their own. It was great that there was a product that my students could share with each other but that it was also useful for our entire grade level to use as part of our math warm up! This experience really showed me what my students can do when they are given options and the chance to explore in their own way." - Diane Sharpe, 1st Grade Teacher
