HoFMeister’s Report
First, thanks to Mark Trengove for stepping in and covering my HoFMeister duties for 2023, in addition to the many roles he currently takes on, making BwB what it is today. It was eighteen months away from the big hills for me, including three months rehab. Thank goodness for P30m and easy P100m hills!
It was another good year for P300m logs, with a total of 4167 ascents in the Hall of Fame, Progress Register and Junior tables, unsurprisingly with 3089 of the ascents by HoF participants. This is well down on last year's record of 7140 ascents, but that was the first proper year following the pandemic.
Nine people did not feature in this year’s Progress Register, as they climbed no new P300m peaks in 2024.
Four junior members recorded ascents in 2024. Well done to you all, and congratulations on having parents who have introduced you to an activity that may well endure long into your futures, and which many of us wish we had discovered in our own earlier years.
There are nine new entrants qualifying for the P300m HoF.
Welcome to three new BwB participants: Paul Klenke, Craig Jagow and Serge Massad. Also six qualified from the PR: Anthony Marra, David Jamieson, Alex Lennon, Casey McCoy, José Martinez and Steve Smith. Notably Anthony has embedded himself deep in the HoF, with 61 ascents.
The prize for the most prolific P300m bagger, once again, goes to Josef Nuernberger with 190 ascents, well short of his seemingly unassailable record of 295 ascents in 2022, but still a good standard averaging more than one P300m ascent every other day.
Bob Packard remains the only participant achieving the Gold Award. However, based on this year's ascents, he could well be joined by both Rob Woodall and Ken Jones next year.
Incidentally, special mention goes to Rob for completing all 607 P300m peaks of Britain and Ireland on Slieveboy [An Sliabh Bui] 422m, P304m in Ireland in May 2024. Only two others are known to have recorded this achievement, including deceased BwB participant Ken Whyte and former BwB member Michael Earnshaw.
Silver Awards (1300 P300m ascents) were achieved by Josef Nuernberger and Adam Walker, easily qualifying with more than 100 ascents each.
Bronze Awards go to Connor McEntee and David Hart, also breaching the qualifying level of 700 P300m ascents with 40 and 105 ascents respectively.
Peak-bagging Calendar Rounds
Calendar Rounds (on which, see the 2024 HoFClerk’s Report here) at the higher prominence thresholds have yet to be recorded by BwB HoF participants, however there are three (Ken Jones, Adam Walker and Brian Kalet) who are within 10 days of requiring a first ascent above P300m.
You can easily check your own progress at P0m, P100m, P300m and P600m under the Statistics option on the Peakbagger App. If this is something you would like to be recorded under the BwB suite of tables, look out for the forthcoming BwB questionnaire to record your interest.
I hope to meet some of you on the Spanish or Scottish hills. Let me know via the Forum, or my personal email mntainman’at’gmail’dot’com, if you are heading in my direction.
Finally, all that remains is for me to congratulate and thank you all for participating, and to wish you a successful bagging year in 2025.
