International Peak-baggers' Tables 2023

P500m

HoFMeister’s Report

2023 is the fourth year for the P500m Hall of Fame and Progress Register, with 134 people recorded (twenty-two more than in 2022): eighty-five in the Hall of Fame, forty-four in the Progress Register and five in the Junior Section. There is not yet a Roll of Honour for this Table.

It was a very busy year for the fans of the "Quintas". First of all, it should be noted a large number of new peak-baggers in the Hall of Fame: from the previous sixty-nine classified peak-baggers, we reached eighty-five during 2023, with an increase of sixteen people - that is almost one quarter of the total of the previous year. Also, the diversity of peaks attained increased, with some countries not well covered by peak-baggers in the previous years, for instance Mongolia and Algeria, now brightly appearing among the peaks attained by our baggers.

In the upper part of the Hall of Fame, a new gold medal was well-deserved by Andy Martin, who achieved it on 23 November, climbing Peak Alone 957m, P647m (Australia). Rob Woodall, with his ninety-nine new Quintas, many of them bagged with Deividas Valaitis, overtakes Ken Jones and approaches the legendary Bob Packard. Even more remarkable is the performance of Josef Nuernberger who, with 138 new Quintas, was in 2023 the most prolific peak-bagger in this Table. Looking at the impressive list of Alpine Quintas he bagged during the year, Monte Bianco/Mount Blanc 4810m, P4697m stands out, along with another three “four-thousanders”. Among the silver medals, there is the new entry of Adam Walker, while Deividas Valaitis, at the end of 2023, only lacked two Quintas to get a silver. With the bronze medals, there are three new entrants: Mihai Giurgiulescu, already a participant in BwB, and two newcomers - Sarah Martin and Steve Sheriff, who achieved their medals without passing through the Progress Register. The Junior section, as in 2022, continues to be led by Sage Kallestad.
