P1000-metre Peaks

This mid-prominence P-category has been around for a shorter time than The Majors, but has a growing popular following.   They are sometimes known as 'The Ribus'.   This is from an Indonesian word meaning 'thousand'.  The first work on producing a list of the P1000m peaks began in Indonesia, with the initial list covering  just Indonesia, Malaysia and East Timor.  Since then the list has expanded across the world.  An international project was launched in 2020 to identify and list all of them.  Their work continues.

There is a good distribution of peaks, although they are scarce in lower mountain areas (e.g. only three in the UK).  There are often much further travelling distances between them, and therefore they generally have a bigger carbon footprint to bag them.  However, they do represent a good compromise of higher prominence peaks between the Majors and the Ultras.

There are estimated to be over 6,600 P1000m peaks across the world.

This Table has a Hall of Fame and Progress Register, and also a Roll of Honour

To enter the P1000m BwB Hall of Fame, you need to have reached the summits of at least 50 peaks worldwide.

Bronze Awards are given at 150 peaks, Silver at 300 peaks and Gold at 500 peaks worldwide.

The current P1000m HoF Meister is Mihai Giurgiulescu.

As citizen of more than one country, Mihai appreciates the ethos of Baggers without Borders, particularly the "without borders" part. Growing up in Eastern Europe instilled in him a love of nature that became fully realized in the mountain ranges of western North America, and which drives him to continue exploring high places across the world.

After starting out with elevation as the determining metric for many of his ascents, Mihai's discovery of prominence opened up new horizons for his climbing interests. Mihai's focus is on P500m and upward; the recent addition of the P1000m (Ribu) category prompted opportunities that previously had not been on the radar. One of Mihai's goals is to climb at least one Ribu in every country he visits which has one. Another goal is to become the first Fifty United States High Points finisher of Romanian origin. Mihai completed the fifty-eight county high points, as well as the fifty-eight county prominence points in California.  He is  one of the handful of documented individuals to have done so, since both lists are monumental undertakings due to the nature of the challenges involved.

Mihai lives at the foot of California's premier range – the Sierra Nevada, where he is able to combine hiking and climbing opportunities with professional work at the intersection of geography and technology. Coming of peak-bagging age in the Golden State allowed Mihai to experience the most varied backyard possible, from backpacking high alpine terrain in summer to scrambling remote desert peaks in winter - and everything in between. The Zen-like state upon finishing a desert climb (when not coming out in the dark) remains one of Mihai's favorite feelings. Recently, his travels have shifted to the international arena, allowing for fulfillment of additional interests in cultural exploration, food tasting, language practice and recounting adventures to family and friends.
