Sgraffito Tile

For my sgraffito tile, I was interested in following a similar theme to the one I had made a few years ago in which I did a sea creature. The animal I chose this time around was a manatee. I then followed a similar design pattern to it, having bubbles and wave patterns surrounding it. Then fill in the manatee with some more pattern work to not just one flat creature.

This project did not take that long but did require some setup time as well as planning. I first came up with the design on paper, then sketched it out. Following that, I used several reference images. I also watched several tutorials on how to do sgraffito properly; this allowed me to remember some of the basics of line cutting. My biggest issue for this piece was the cutting since when I received my piece, it was closer to bone dry rather than leather hard which made me have to be careful.

This project went well. The pattern work was really good, but I did make a few mistakes, mainly the face. I think I could have spent more time on it, and it would have fit and looked better.
