The Lion Tracker's Guide to Life

The Lion Tracker's Guide To Life, by Boyd Varty, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2019

Not just for pandemic reading, but pretty close.  A look from a far place that brings us to a happier world following Varty's special map! that takes us to wonderful things - nature, animals, the rest of the inhabitants of our now distorted world.  Don't you hope that at least the elephants  won't understand or even see Covid 19?

There is wisdom and some mystery here, not a religion but a different way of seeing.  With Varty and his two buddies following a sound into the bush - actually a not-too-distant roar -  the tracking journey begins.  "Tracking," he said, "is very much like learning a foreign language.  Single tracks are words... the more you do it the more natural and fluid it becomes."

Drawing down to a simple world, the author, who is also a life coach, shows us forgotten and unnoticed details.  The sketches illustrating the animals and tracks that appeared during their journey are lovely, not often seen but so well-done.  Under a description of an impala herd on the move, accompanied by a hoofprint sketch,  Varty says "There is a wilderness in each person waiting to be brought back to life."

Lions, impala, monkey, eagles, you've got them all, and they're still out there, circling and watching.  What a perfect diversion - take it!
