                          The Mill Kids favorite swimming spot:  The Nissitissit in East Pepperell at the site of Mr. Lawrence's grist mill, one of two remaining mills in the town, the other being Pepperell Braiding Company (still active).  During the first Industrial Revolution the Nissitissit supported three water-power mill villages, hosting lumber and grist mills, rag and later pulp paper, a harp mill, and, moving into integrated turbines, Blakes Machine Shops.  Water-power dams, plus chemicals and  metals used in various processes were thought to have killed off this area's fresh-water oysters, but they were "rediscovered" in the construction of the replacement bridge (the platform from which this photo was taken).  The Nissitissit is now a swimmable Class B river stocked with trout each spring!  And there are fresh-water oysters somewhere down there (but we won't tell you where)!  A Mill Girl at Blue Heron Journal
