The Boston Marathon ComebackRunner (and Sandy Island camper) Dan Doxson tells his story:

On April 15, 2013, I was a volunteer at the Boston Marathon.  My job was to help finishers make their way to the right buses where they could retrieve their bags. I was positioned at the corner of Beacon and Berkeley from 10 AM until when the bombs went off.  As the runners were approaching the finish line on Boylston Street, the unthinkable happened - I heard an explosion, saw smoke and the crowd broke loose.  Some runners stopped mid-step, while others tried to keep on toward the finish line.  I saw a man fall, another stood in confusion with blood pouring down his shattered leg. There were kids and families frozen on the sidewalk, and uniformed police suddenly appeared.  It was hell.

Looking back I can say that I saw and felt many things I never thought I would in my lifetime. The pure panic on peoples' faces, so quickly followed by kindness, courage and generosity were remarkable to me. Seeing people cry out in shock was overshadowed by the good in humanity. Police officers, firefighters and regular citizens carrying the injured showed how heroic our city was. I only wish I could have done more.

Now in 2014 as an employee with State Street Corporation I was fortunate enough to be accepted to run for Beth Israel in the 2014 Boston Marathon.  I chose BI because it was among the first to take in Marathon victims. These first responders quickly showed what teamwork, compassion and courage could do.

It is still very difficult  to really explain what I saw, but the horror and panic quickly turned into scenes of people helping one another, and that was what made this terrifying event so remarkable. So now I'm training for the next Marathon, and this time I'll be a runner.
