Positive Sleep

Positive Sleep, A Holistic Approach to Resolve Sleep Issues and Transform Your Life, by Giles Watkins, LID Publishing 2019

You can immediately tell from the size and design of this book that it's meant to be picked up and used - repeatedly - as a tool to help solve this awful problem of lack of sleep.  And if you hesitate to solve the problem with drugs, it's a great resource.  In 22 quick chapters the author gives us solid recommendations, from the "turn off the blue screen" habit, to mindfulness techniques that will help train the brain as you work to create new habits.  None of this is easy, especially for people who work overtime or are suffering through an illness, but each small step will take reader a little bit farther from the nightmarish results of insomnia.

Watkins references a McKinsey survey of 196 business leaders that found that 66% and 55%, respectively, reported that they were generally dissatisfied with their sleep quantity and quality.  Watkins' holistic approach combines diet and fitness, including mindfulness and attitude toward work and relationships, with the latest neuroscience and personal experience.

Let's look at a few specifics recommended in Positive Sleep:

    *  do not schedule meetings before 9 am and after 6 pm

    *  set boundaries on times that emails can be sent

    *  hold stand-up meetings

    *  be open about the need for adequate sleep

    *  use flexible working arrangements

    *  provide natural light and nap rooms

And for individuals, the author recommends:

    *  limit caffeine

    * do a thorough diet detox twice a year

    *  exercise

    *  take naps - The Mill Girl disagrees - 15 minutes max!

    * allow enough time to wind down

    *  Epsom salt baths

    *  mindfulness

    *  read in bed

    * avoid alarm clocks

    *  meditate in the morning
