"Making a Difference" Speaker Series
Ridgewood High School's "Making a Difference" Speaker Series concluded with a final presentation on June 7th by Ms. Mary Beth Tinker. Ms. Tinker discussed her commitment to advocacy of student rights and reflected on her experience as a student activist. Mary Beth Tinker was part of a small group of students in Des Moines, Iowa who made history by wearing black armbands to school to mourn the dead in the Vietnam War and call for a Christmas truce. After being suspended for their actions, the students eventually won a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, with the Court declaring in 1969 that neither teachers nor students "shed their Constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." Ms. Tinker's presentation allowed time for a Q&A with the audience, during which students were able to ask questions about the legacy of the Tinker case and make connections to students' rights today.
The "Making a Difference" Speakers Series is a program that highlights the impact individuals can have, even in the darkest parts of our world. This presentation was made possible with the help of Social Studies teachers, Mrs. Demirjian and Mr. Muro, and department supervisor, Mr. Ferreri, along with the expertise of James Michels for this digital experience! Thank you to the ongoing support of the staff and students of the English and Social Studies departments. Please keep an eye out for future Speaker Series events!

Applied Engineering Club's FireGone Team Won 2nd Place at Thomas Edison Pitch Contest
RHS Applied Engineering's FireGone Team competed in person in the Thomas Edison Pitch Contest held at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange on Wednesday, May 18th. The team was chosen as one of three finalists in the High School division. Being selected as finalists is an honor because, in addition to the elementary and middle school divisions, some 800 students in over 300 teams from 26 states and four countries participated in the contest. The FireGone team pitched their Wildfire Assessor prototype to an expert panel of judges consisting of education professionals, Edison scholars, and technical/business experts. The team was awarded 2nd place and won Science Kits for our schools!
In the spirit of Thomas Edison, the FireGone team worked year-round to successfully invent an environmental non-intrusive device that gathers environmental data and sounds alarms to a central watch station when there is a high potential for a fire. It is envisioned that these Wildfire Assessors devices will be strategically placed in forests so firefighters will know the precise location of any possible danger. The Wildfire Assessor has already received positive feedback from wildfire fighters in Oregon and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
The FireGone Team members are juniors Alex Mueller, Michael Ip, Zahir Syed, and Praket Nigam. Their 5-minute pitch can be viewed here https://youtu.be/vWt_iLHzb1c.
