Why did a payment fail?

Payments can fail for a few reasons:

  • The account has insufficient funds

  • The account is a savings account and cannot make payments

  • The account holder puts a stop order on payment

When a payment is initiated, the ledger shows it as Pending. It takes the U.S. banking system 1-4 business days to resolve the payment as Succeeded or Failed. As soon as our payments processor informs us of the resolution, we update the payment's status in the ledger.

If the tenant has had successful online payments before, we ask them to make sure they have sufficient funds, then try again. If the tenant has had other failed payments recently, we will ask them to pay by secured funds or electronic cash processing instead, which turns cash payments into electronic payments and cannot fail. We may also charge a failed payment fee, depending on what the tenant's lease allows.
