B. Select the arrow to access the Gem Manager.
Step 2
Choose Your Starting Point
A. Select the blue '+ New Gem' button to start creating a Gem from Scratch or...
B. Select one of the Gems 'Premade by Google' from the quick menu. Once open you can select the option to 'Make a Copy' which is under the three dot menu at the top right. It will open the Gem in an editable form.
C. Choose from other Gems 'Premade by Google' under the 'Show More' menu.
D. Select from any Gems you have created in the past.
E. Select from Gems shared with you by others. You can find a great collection of Gems EduGems, created by Eric Curts, that can be downloaded to this section with just a few clicks.
F. Select the share icon to bring up a sharing menu that lets you copy a link for sharing and select who you want to grant access to your Gem.
G. Select the pencil icon to edit your Gem. Details on editing are in Step 3.
H. Select the three dots to bring up a menu with options for starting a new chat with this Gem, pinning the gem to this screen, copying the Gem, locating where the Gem is saved in your Drive, and deleting the Gem.
Step 3
Fill in Gem Information and Save
A. Give your Gem a name you will recognize and associate with its purpose. Once entered the name will show in the Preview Area at the right.
B. The description you put in here will be used to remind you what the Gem does.
C. Describe the main objective of your Gem. Include its capabilities, limitations, and the style of response you want. Give your Gem information that will help it function when you enter a prompt. Poorly written instructions will work but the more descriptive, detailed, and organized your instructions are the better your Gem will function.
D. Use the undo or redo buttons to help edit your instructions.
E. Consider using this AI button to rewrite your instructions in a way that is more clear and organized for your Gem.
F. Select the down arrow if you would like to specify a tool that will primarily be used with this Gem. Select from:
Guided learning - Helps user learn a topic rather than Gemini's normal approach of answering and explaining.
Create image - Create an image following parameters given in the prompt (and your Gem)
Canvas - Opens an interactive workspace. Instead of a standard back-and-forth chat, it provides a 'digital blank slate' where you can refine, edit, and preview your work side-by-side with Gemini.
Deep research - Causes Gemini to think on the prompt for minutes to create a thesis style in-depth response.
Create music - Prompt Gemini with an image or a description to create a 30 second song with lyrics on the topic you chose.
G. Consider adding your personal files and resources Gemini should consider every time a prompt is created using this Gem.
Upload files - Such as PDFs or other documents saved to your device.
Add from Drive - Access any content saved to your Google Drive.
NotebookLM - Connect a NotebookLM you have previously created and all its content and conversations will influence prompts used with this Gem. NotebookLM instructions are coming to the Self Help Site soon.
H. You can try your Gem out to see how it performs and then refine it by editing your instruction or adding additional files.
I. Select the blue 'Save' button when you are done creating it.
After being saved your Gem will appear in the section described in Step 2D and you can reopen the Gem for more editing as described in Step 2G.
