An 'Outline' in Aristotle is a combination of settings that allow or block URLs, Apps, or limit the number of sites a student can have open. Once created teachers can 'Apply an Outline' to a specific class, student, or apply it to a schedule. Outlines are used for specific reoccurring situations like when a teacher wants to only allow specific sites, such as a specific resource while students take an online test or if they want to allow a specific list of fun sites on a reward day. A teacher should consider following directions for 'Filters' if they have one or two sites to add or block whenever students are in their classroom.
Step 1
Open Aristotle
Login to Aristotle and select the 'Classroom Outlines' icon at the top of the page.
Step 2
Create Outline
Select the green '+Create Outline' icon.
Step 3
Outline Information
Type in a name and description for your outline and then select 'NEXT->' at the bottom right of the screen. The name and description is for your reference, so you are able to recognize it in the future.
Step 4
Filter Settings
Select the field beneath 'Filter Type' to open a drop down menu.
Choose the first option to allow students to access all district approved sites, except ones (if any) you will list as blocked. Use this option if there are specific sites you wish to block. This is also the option to choose if you want to limit the number of tabs but not the sites students access.
Choose the second option to limit students so they can access only the specific sites you will list as accessible.
Note: Teachers often request a third option which is to allow a list of sites in addition to the ones currently allowed. Unfortunately Aristotle does not provide that as a choice but we are working with them to add it.
Notice when you make your 'Filter Type' selection, a new field opens for you to add the URL (web address) to your list of blocked/allowed sites. Often a website needs multiple URLs for full functionality so each one needs to be added to this list. Use this document to look up the site you are trying to block/unblock and then add each of its URLs that are listed to your Allow/Block list.
Add the URL of a site to the field where it says example.com and select the ALLOW or BLOCK icon to the right to add it to the list. Add each one of URLs on the list individually.
The list at the right shows the sites you have selected. You can remove them from that list by selecting the trash can icon to its right.
Step 5
Tab Control
Use this screen to select how you would like student Chromebooks to appear when you start up your session.
Under the heading 'Maximum Open Tabs' type in a number for the maximum number of tabs you will allow to be open. Please note that some sites need multiple tabs to operate. If students have problems accessing sites you may need to increase this number to allow more tabs.
Under the heading 'Close All Open Tabs' selecting 'Yes' will cause all student tabs to close when you start your session.
Under the heading 'Add sites to open list' you can add sites that will automatically open at the start of your session. This process is similar to adding to the Filter Settings lists in Step 7.
Step 6
Application Settings
These options are similar to the Filter Settings in Step 7 except you will be blocking apps on the student's Chromebook.
Select the field below 'App Mode ' to open a drop down menu.
Choose the first option to allow students to access apps on their Chromebook, except the ones you list as blocked. Use this option if there are specific apps you wish to block (like a calculator during a math test)
Choose the second option to limit students so they only access specific apps you list out.
Notice when you make your selection, a new field opens allowing you to add apps to your list of blocked or allowed apps. Begin typing the name of an app in the field and a list of related apps will appear. Select the correct one and select the ALLOW or BLOCK icon to the right which will add it to the list. The list at the right shows the apps you have selected. You can remove them from that list by selecting the trash can icon to its right.
Step 7
Save
After selecting the green 'SAVE' icon at the bottom right you are done with selecting options for the Outline and are brought to a screen with options to Apply, Share, Edit, or Delete your outline. Your outline is not activated until you 'Apply' it to a group of students which you can do by following the directions to Apply an Outline.
