Your computer has different levels of inactivity explained in step 3.
Step 1
Select the Windows icon in your taskbar, usually at the bottom left of your screen.
Step 2
In the menu that appears, select the power icon which looks like a circle with a line coming out of it.
Step 3
In the window that appears, select which power option you would like.
Sleep turns off your screen and slows active memory but keeps it in a state of readiness. It will require your password when you return to activity with the computer. Sleep is used when you want to safeguard your computer when you need to step away from it.
Shut down will close all open software and bring power usage and processing to a minimum. Shut down is used when you won't use your computer for a few hours or longer.
Restart will shut down and then immediately start the computer back up. Restart is used because many software updates only install during the start-up process. Multiple updates may be waiting in queue for a restart to load so shutting down or restarting daily is recommended.
