Each student teacher placement may have different requirements for hosting a student teacher. This checklist is focused on the technology side of hosting a student teacher so it may not cover all the necessary steps in your situation.
Consider asking the custodial staff in your building if there is a desk available for your student teacher.
High School: hsmaint@bwsd.k12.wi.us
Viking: vkmaint@bwsd.k12.wi.us
Greenfield: gfmaint@bwsd.k12.wi.us.
In some schools it is better to email or talk with the custodian directly.
Consider gathering technology items your student teacher may need. The district does not provide laptop or Chromebooks for student teachers but a student-use Chromebooks may be available for checkout through the library. If your student teacher has an email address they have network access which means they can log into a Chromebooks or your laptop. In doing so they will be able to access the software on the computer but not any of the files you have created or the access to online apps you have established.
Follow directions on this website to Request a New District User Account as soon as you know your student teacher's name. Please note it is policy to not include student teachers on any group email lists so when the form asks about email lists you should not include any.
Consider writing an email letting others know you will have a student teacher including the student teacher's name, start and end dates, affiliated university, who they will work with including grade level / subject area, and their current email address if known. Be sure to include Kelsey Brewer, Dennis Paquette, and your front office staff on that email.
Email Dennis Paquette at dpaquette@bwsd.k12.wi.us to arrange a meeting between your student teacher and Dennis Paquette. If the district has multiple student teachers starting at the same time he may arrange to make this a group meeting so if you know of other student teachers it would be helpful if you suggested a common time it would work to meet with them all. At this meeting the student teacher will get directions to access his district accounts, be told about confidentiality statutes, and district resources will be explained. You should also prepare your student teacher with any other technology questions or requests they should ask. Meetings may last up to an hour depending on group size and problems we encounter. They will be held at the building your student teacher is working and you are not expected to attend the meeting.
For some accounts, like Skyward, it is not possible to give your student teacher their own user credentials. If you need to share a username and password you can follow these directions to change passwords after the student teacher leaves the district. Some teachers choose to change their password before their student teacher arrives so they can switch back to their old password when they are gone.
Encourage your student teacher to use IT services as any teacher would by sharing access to this website as well as ways for them to Schedule Appointments or Submit Help Desk Tickets.
If your student teacher used one of your device like a laptop or Chromebook you should consider deleting their account information. This is NOT because of security concerns. Each time a new person logs into a device they fill up some of the memory, more if the person works with large files. Deleting users from your device frees up memory which helps your device run better. Deleting the user will not affect any of your data or even any files the user may have shared with you. It will cause a slightly longer time for that person to log into the device in the future and it will delete any files they saved directly to your local hard drive, like the computer desktop. Follow these directions to Remove User From Chromebook and these directions to Remove User From Laptop. If the steps seem difficult to follow feel free to use the Schedule Appointment button at the bottom of the page to get some help.
Follow directions to change passwords if you shared any accounts with your student teacher.
