USDA Smart Snacks Guidelines – Quick Reference
Applies to: All foods and beverages sold on school campus during the school day (outside of the school lunch & breakfast programs).
School Campus: All areas under school jurisdiction accessible to students. (Excludes teacher lounges/staff-only areas.)
School Day: Midnight through 30 minutes after the official school day ends.
Items sold in:
School stores
Snack bars
Vending machines
Culinary class sales to students
Items not consumed on campus (e.g., frozen pizza fundraisers).
Must meet USDA nutrition standards if sold during the school day.
Two exemptions per student organization, per school year for non-compliant items.
Exempt fundraisers cannot take place in the cafeteria during meal service.
Documentation required for:
All food sales outside of food service
Fundraiser compliance/exemptions
Records will be reviewed during Administrative Reviews.
Reminder: Compliance is a federal requirement to ensure a healthy environment for all students.
