SCQF Level 4 Mentoring Award & a Saltire Award


COURSE CONTENT

Peer Mentoring allows pupils personalisation and choice in terms of how pupils carry out this role. This course will cover 2 periods each week.

At the start of the year all pupils will look to complete the SCQF Level 4 Mentoring Award which consists of a theory unit and a practical unit. The theory unit will be taught and is assessed via an online, multiple choice assessment. This unit covers the purposes and principles of mentoring schemes in any environment, and so is useful addition to your CV for future employment. Pupils will then undertake a brief in-house training programme to help them develop a better understanding of how to support their fellow pupils within the classroom setting. This will include training on different learning needs and strategies to use to meet those needs.

Following this input pupils will then be allocated 1 period a week working with an S1 or S2 pupil during their reading period in English. In this role, pupils will listen to a junior pupil reading aloud and check their understanding of the text, explaining any new vocabulary. This will allow senior pupils the opportunity to overtake the practical unit of the Mentoring Award.

Beyond this, pupils will have the choice of a second period supporting in a reading period, or they can look to provide support in the ASFL department or in the classroom setting of any subject that they feel comfortable and confident in.
