FA Construction (L5)

What will you learn?

Within the FA pupils will undertake the following units:

3D modelling for the Build Environment

The purpose of this unit is to show how structural behaviour might affect design choices and provide an introduction to some basic skills and knowledge needed to create a simple 3D model. Techniques using a suitable digital format, and/or a more practical approach will enable the learner to create a working model that can demonstrate a connection between a mass model and its associated technical, pictorial and functional specification information.

Carpentry and bench joinery

The Unit require the learner to use and care for a basic range of tools and materials whilst undertaking skilled tasks associated with bench joinery. Learners who achieve this Unit should feel confident in progressing to more demanding higher level skills and awards in the Construction Industry when the range and level of work will be wider/more complex.

Sustainability in the Build Environment

This unit provides a basic introduction to sustainability and considers ways in which global, national and local communities are affected. The learner will also investigate the basic techniques and methods commonly adopted in sustainable building design and construction of buildings.

The Work Challenge Unit

Work Based Challenge Unit/Meta-skills is designed to support the delivery of the Skills for Work. Learners will take part in a challenge unit involving the construction of a large-scale project. This year students are working on building wooden play kitchens.

Incorporated within the WBCU is a meta-skills framework designed to emphasise the importance of meta-skills to industry in addition to technical and practical ability. Through the project associated learners are required to understand meta-skills and consider which they are likely to develop through their role in the project.
