Why do this course?

The course will provide pupils with the opportunity to develop practical, creative and analytical skills. There will be opportunities to use and develop skills in ICT and music technology. The course will also support pupils in developing skills for life, learning and work such as literacy and numeracy.

What will you experience?

A wide range of teaching strategies will be used in the music class ranging from individual practice, paired and/or group work. Pupils will be involved in negotiating targets and evaluating their own progress as well as that of others and will be expected to take on a responsibility for their own learning.

Areas of the course will be assessed in a variety of ways ranging from performance and listening tests as well as completing a folio of compositions. Pupils will be involved in peer and self-evaluation in all areas of the course.

What will you learn?

The aim of this course is to provide pupils with a broad experience of expressive arts, providing coverage of the Level 3/4 experiences and outcomes in the subject of music. The areas of study will be:

  1. Presenting – pupils will be encouraged to develop skills in performing on an instrument of their choice or on voice in a solo or a group situation.

  2. Presenting – pupils will be encouraged to develop skills in performing on a second instrument of their choice or on voice in a solo or a group situation. This instrument will be in a different category from their first instrument. (See list below).

  3. Creating – pupils will be encouraged to develop skills in composition and will be encouraged to use technology to create.

  4. Evaluating – pupils will be encouraged to develop skills in listening and will be given the opportunity to experience a wide variety of music where they will analyse technical aspects and express personal opinions.

In the Presenting elements the instruments should be chosen from two of the following categories:

  • ACCORDION

  • DRUM KIT/TIMPANI/SNARE DRUM

  • STRINGS/MANDOLIN

  • BASS GUITAR

  • GUITAR/UKELELE

  • TUNED PERCUSSION

  • BAGPIPES/CHANTER

  • TIN WHISTLE

  • HARP/CLARSACH

  • VOICE

  • BRASS

  • PIANO/KEYBOARD

  • WOODWIND(including recorder)

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs. Activities set may include practice of a practical skill, preparation for assessment or research for an assignment. Pupils will be expected, where possible, to practise both chosen instruments on a regular basis in order to develop skills necessary to complete class work. They will also be encouraged to listen to a wide variety of music at home and develop an understanding of listening concepts.

Assessment

Knowledge and practical skills will be assessed in a variety of ways depending on the unit of study. This will include project work, classroom tests (theory and practical) and peer assessments. Pupils will use assessment feedback to set achievable short-term targets.
