What will you learn?
The course comprises of three key areas; Bench skills, machine processes and fabrication and thermal joining.
Skills Developed:
Workshop safety.
Reading and interpreting drawings and diagrams.
Measuring and marking out metal sections and sheet materials
Correct and safe use of tools and machines.
Metalworking techniques
Knowledge and understanding of the properties and uses of a range of metal.
Knowledge and understanding of sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context.
Why do this course?
This course is a broad-based qualification, suitable for learners with an interest in practical technologies. It is largely learner-centred, includes practical and experiential learning opportunities and is suitable for those wanting to progress onto further levels of study or a related career.
What will you experience?
Pupils will use working drawings to help create a sense of ‘real life’ for their work, largely in a workshop setting. They will manufacture a variety of products throughout the course utilising skills in measuring/marking, tools and machinery while following correct processes. Candidates develop skills in reading drawings and diagrams, measuring and marking out, cutting, shaping and finishing materials.
The course allows pupils to work with a range of metals to produce a variety of products. Pupils will also engage in academic aspects of metalwork to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the subject.
Pupils learn how to work effectively alongside others in a shared workshop environment. The course encourages candidates to become responsible and creative in their use of technologies and to develop attributes such as flexibility, enthusiasm, perseverance, reliability and confidence.

Assessment
National 5 - The course assessment has two components.
Practical Assignment - 70 marks 70%
Question Paper - 60 marks 30%
*Question Paper is reduced in weighting against practical.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Art, Design & Technologies. However, as a guide:
A recommendation on completion of BGE S3 Skills for Work & the Practical 5 Woodwork course.
Completion of another National 5 subject within the Faculty.
*Entry available with no experience on discussion with Principal Teacher, Faculty.
Homework
Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs.
