What will you learn?

The Advanced Higher aims to build upon and extend candidates’ mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding in a way that recognizes problem solving as an essential element and enables them to integrate their knowledge of different aspects of the subject. This course involves all the elements of Numeracy core skills at Advanced Higher level and the Critical Thinking part of Problem Solving also at Advanced Higher level.

Methods in Algebra and Calculus:

  • Partial Fractions

  • Further Differentiation and Integration

  • Solving both first order and second order differential equations


Applications of Algebra and Calculus:

  • The binomial theorem

  • Complex Numbers

  • Properties of functions

  • Volumes of revolution

  • Sequence and Series

Geometry, Proof and Systems of Equations:

  • Matrices

  • Vectors

  • Proofs

Mathematics is important in everyday life. It helps us to make sense of the world we live in and to manage our lives. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.

Assessment

Knowledge and skills will be assessed in different ways, depending on the topic being studied. This will include classroom tests, group work tasks and homework.

Advanced Higher will include internal assessments covering each of the standards in the three units and a Course Award exam which will be externally assessed by SQA and will be graded (A-D).

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Maths. However, as a guide:

  • A pass a the previous NQ level. i.e. for Advanced Higher, a pass at Higher.
