The course comprises of two key areas; Design and Materials and Manufacture. Both areas must be completed with designs, models and work evidencing pupil's ability prior to starting their assignment.

This course is for students who enjoy being creative and using tools and machines to produce prototypes. Skills gained in this course would help learners gain entry to apprenticeships, further study or careers such as; construction, manufacturing, product designing, engineering, sales & business and media.
Pupils will work from briefs to help create a sense of ‘real life’ for their work. They will have to use the design process to design a variety of products throughout the course.
The course allows pupils to work with a range of materials to produce a variety of products. Pupils will be expected to represent these products using a range of media, from card and plastic to wood and metal. Students will also have the opportunity to work using CADCAM technology through the use of a laser cutter.

National 5 - The course assessment has three mandatory components:
Design Assignment 55 marks 30%
Practical Assignment 45 marks 25%
Question Paper 80 marks 45%
Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs.

Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Art, Design & Technologies. However, as a guide:
A recommendation on completion of BGE S3 Innovative Design Course
Completion of National 5 Art & Design or National 5 Graphic Communication.
*Entry available with no experience on discussion with Principal Teacher, Faculty.
