What will you learn?

The purpose of the National 5 Applications of Mathematics course is to motivate and challenge candidates by enabling them to think through real-life situations involving mathematics and to form a plan of action based on logic. The mathematical skills within this course are underpinned by numeracy and designed to develop candidates’ mathematical reasoning skills in areas relevant to learning, life and work.

Area of Mathematics covered

  • Numeracy

  • Financial Skills

  • Statistical Skills

  • Measurement Skills

  • Geometry Skills

Why do this course?

The course will provide pupils with the opportunity to build on their mathematical knowledge and to develop their reasoning, logic, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills.

What will you experience?

A wide range of teaching strategies are used with classes, such as direct teaching, individual, paired and group work, practical tasks and mathematical games.

Pupils will be encouraged to set their own next steps, for example through profile sheets, and are expected to take on an early responsibility for their learning.

Key Facts

Everything you need to know before selecting this course

Assessment

Knowledge and skills will be assessed in different ways, depending on the topic being studied. This will include classroom tests, group work tasks and homework. Much of the challenge comes in decoding situational maths.

National 5 will include internal assessments covering each of the standards in the three units, and a Course Award exam which will be externally assessed by SQA and will be graded (A-D).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Maths. However, as a guide:

  • A pass a the previous NQ level. i.e. for National 5, a pass at National 4.

  • A recommendation on completion of BGE S3 Course

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs.

Progression and Employment

Everything you need to know about future pathways from this course

Progression

From this course pupils will be able to progress to National 5 Mathematics and may be able to progress to Higher Applications of Mathematics.

Employment

There is a wide range of career opportunities open to mathematicians from graduates downwards. Areas range from financial work which includes accountancy, actuarial work, banking and insurance to management services including computing, economics and statistics.
