What will you learn?

The course comprises of three key areas; Carcase Construction, Flat Frame and Machining and Finishing. All areas must be completed with models and work evidencing pupil ability prior to starting their assignment or Added Value Unit.

Skills Developed:

  • Workshop safety.

  • Reading and interpreting drawings and diagrams.

  • Measuring and marking out.

  • Correct and safe use of tools and machines.

  • Manufacturing processes and techniques.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the properties and uses of a range of wood.

  • Knowledge and understanding of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context.

Why do this course?

The course is for pupils who enjoy working with wood to make models using tools and machines. The skills learned in this course will help entry into career areas such as joinery, construction, manufacturing, engineering.

What will you experience?

Pupils will work from engineering drawings to help create a sense of ‘real life’ for their work, largely in a workshop setting. They will manufacture a variety of products throughout the course utilising skills in measuring/marking, tools and machinery while following correct processes.

The course allows pupils to work with a range of woods to produce a variety of products. Pupils will also engage in academic aspects of woodwork to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Assessment

National 4 - The Course consists of 4 mandatory Units:

  • Carcase Construction

  • Flat Frame

  • Machining and Finishing

  • Added Value Unit

National 5 - The course assessment has two components.

  • Practical Assignment - 70 marks 70%

  • Question Paper - 60 marks 30%

*Question Paper is reduced in weighting against practical.


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Art, Design & Technologies. However, as a guide:

  • A recommendation on completion of BGE S3 Skills for Work course.

  • Completion of another National 5 subject within the Faculty.

*Entry available with no experience on discussion with Principal Teacher, Faculty.

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher on a regular basis, this will be available on TEAMs.
