FA Automotive (L4)

What will you learn?

Within the Foundation Apprenticeships learners will undertake the following units:

The car

Learners will learn to identify, select and use automotive checklists and carry out a safety check. They will learn to change a road wheel safely using the car’s own jack and tool kit and carry out a valet on a car.

The garage

Learners will learn the structure of the retail automotive industry and the roles and responsibilities of individuals working within it. They will also study the relevant health and safety requirements in an automotive service and repair workshop.

The technician

The unit introduces learners to some of the tools and techniques used by technicians in the automotive industry. The learner will use a range of common hand tools as well as more specialised tools and equipment. Learners will also learn the names, functions and serviceability of automotive components while engaging in practical activities as well as gaining basic knowledge of working safely in an automotive engineering environment.

To enrich the learner’s understanding and range of associated skills they will carry out engineering processes such as spot welding, soldering, thread cutting and brake pipe manufacture.

Vehicle modification

The emphasis of this unit is on the consolidation of previous practical skills which have been developed. Learners will select a modification project to carry out on a vehicle. This will enable learners to put into practice and further develop some of the basic handskills and problem solving abilities that an Automotive Technician requires. Learners will gain experience and build confidence as they carry out the tasks required to complete the selected modification.
