S3 BGE Innovative Design

Why do this course?

This course will show pupils the possibilities of design through practical and digital activities. Pupils will use the design factors to design products, some of these will be made in the workshop others will be made digitally. It will incorporate the use of CADCAM technology and give pupils an insight into the commercial manufacturing industry. The course will allow pupils to create 3D models as well as 2D drawings and commercial and visual graphics to promote.

What will you experience?

The course is exploratory and experiential in nature. Pupils will gain an appreciation of the importance of 2D and 3D design through:

  • A series of focused drawing activities to build skills in measuring, proportion and scale. These will develop understanding of drawing representations and application of standards.

  • A range of design projects which develop presentation techniques and the application of 3D computer design and graphics software including preparation of manufacturing drawings.

  • A portfolio of work that includes, physical models, 3D representations and promotional designs.

What will you learn?

The Course provides opportunities for learners to gain skills in:

  • Freehand sketching

  • 3D modelling skills – manual and digital

  • Reading, interpreting drawings and diagrams and creating graphics

  • Initiating, developing and communicating ideas graphically

  • Experimenting with software and materials effectively

  • Cutting, shaping, fixing and joining resistant materials

  • Evaluating work using graphic and product design terminology

LITERACY

Pupils will learn the skills to be able to annotate using specific design vocabulary to justify and evaluate their design ideas. They will be encouraged to research new technology and techniques and identify where these can be used in their designs.

NUMERACY

Pupils will learn the importance of marking and measuring accurately and develop skills in using the correct equipment to do so either in practical or drawing work. Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills will be taught to support the marking out process.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Pupils will learn about the safety of themselves and others when in a workshop environment, learning to assess and manage risk, to protect themselves and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. They are trusted in the workshop and build up confidence using machinery. They have opportunities to personalise and have full ownership over their designs, supporting them in improving self-esteem.

Key Facts

Everything you need to know before selecting this course

Specialist resources and equipment will be provided for course work although pupils should consider the merit in having their own personal equipment. This will support homework and help them achieve a good standard in their work.

Homework

Homework will be set on a regular basis as appropriate to support class work.

Assessment

Grade assessments are done by staff although pupils will be expected to play an active part in formative self and peer assessment. Pupils will be involved in setting targets and evaluating their own as well as the progress of others. Pupils are expected to take responsibility for their learning. The method of assessment will depend on the nature of the work produced. This may be a review of project work or classroom tests.

Progression and Employment

Everything you need to know about future pathways from this course

Progression

Pupils participating in Innovative Design can progress to N4/N5, Graphic Communication, Design and Manufacture. Higher level is available for Graphic Communication and Design and Manufacture if National 5 is achieved. The course would also prepare students with the basic skills required for the N5 Practical Woodwork course.

Employment

This course is suitable for all learners who are interested in becoming a:

  • Product Design

  • Computer Aided Modelling

  • Architecture

  • Construction
