S3 BGE Technical Skills for Work

Why do this course?

Pupils will learn practical craft skills relating to resistant materials such as composite boards, natural wood, plastics and metal. They cover a range of tools, machinery, equipment and associated processes. Pupils complete a series of projects which involve designing, technical communication skills, planning for manufacture and making finished items.

Pupils gain an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop or similar environment.

What will you experience?

Pupils will use a range of hand tools and machinery for processing a metal and wood. Pupils will be expected to manufacture a series of projects to a given standard of craftsmanship and accuracy.

Initially there will be considerable instruction and teacher control over the manufacturing process but as the course progresses pupils will be given an increasing degree of freedom and eventually be able to undertake independent management of their work.

What will you learn?

The skills acquired by successfully completing this course will be valuable for learning, for life and for the world of work. They will learn how to work effectively alongside others in a shared workshop environment. Pupils will be trained in the skills needed in identifying and dealing with potential hazards in their working practices.

Pupils will learn:

  • skills in reading drawings and interpreting diagrams

  • graphical skills to create and communicate technical information and ideas

  • to select and use a range of workshop tools and equipment

  • measuring and marking out of materials

  • cutting, shaping, fixing and joining resistant materials

  • apply safe working practices in a workshop or similar environment and take account of good practice regarding sustainability and recycling

LITERACY

Pupils will be introduced to specific key terminology and processes to support them in their progression with the department. Pupils will learn how to explain processes in detail to allow them to discuss in detail.

NUMERACY

Pupils will learn the importance of marking and measuring accurately and develop skills in using the correct equipment to do so either in practical or drawing work. Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills will be taught to support the marking out process.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Pupils will learn about the safety of themselves and others when in a workshop environment, learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. They are trusted in the workshop and build up confidence using machinery. They have opportunities to personalize and have full ownership over their designs, supporting them in improving self-esteem.

Homework

Homework will be set by the class teacher to support classroom activities as required.

Assessment

Grade assessments are done by staff although pupils will be expected to play an active part in formative self and peer assessment. Pupils will be involved in setting targets and evaluating their own as well as the progress of others. Pupils are expected to take responsibility for their learning. The method of assessment will depend on the nature of the work produced. This may be a review of project work or classroom tests.

Progression

Pupils participating in Skills for Work can progress to National 5 Practical Woodwork or Level 4 Automotive.
