The Scottish Baccalaureate in Social Sciences has been designed to provide a challenging and rewarding experience for candidates in sixth year of secondary school.
It is based on a coherent group of subjects at Higher and Advanced Higher level with the addition of the Interdisciplinary Project, which offers added breadth and value and helps to equip the candidate with the generic skills, attitudes and confidence necessary to make the transition into Higher Education and/or employment.
The Scottish Baccalaureate in Social Sciences requires two, different eligible Social Science Courses, at least one of which must be at Advanced Higher level.
The mandatory components of the Baccalaureate are:
· 2 eligible course – Advanced Higher Level – SCQF level 7 – SCQF Points 64
· 1 eligible course – Higher level – SCQF level 6 – SCQF points 24
One of the above Courses must be English or Mathematics and this may be at Higher or Advanced Higher level.
Components do not have to be completed in the same academic year, for example a Higher course completed in S5 can contribute.
The Interdisciplinary Project Unit will be graded A, B or C.
Candidates may choose two core courses, or one core course and one broadening course from the following lists:

This course aims to develop the learner's skills and abilities as an independent learner and provides an opportunity to work at an Advanced Higher Level on a project area of their own choice.
The main focus of this Inter-disciplinary Unit is the development of skills through a Social Sciences based project.
The research is presented to different audiences.
The Baccalaureate provides an opportunity to develop skills to aid the transition to Higher education. It can be used to give a deeper experience of a subject, demonstrating an enthusiasm for a subject.

planning: time, resource and information management
independent learning: autonomy and challenge in own learning

Criteria for award of Pass:
Criteria for award of Pass Candidates who achieve a Pass in all mandatory components and who do not meet the criteria for Distinction will be awarded a Pass in the Scottish Baccalaureate in Social Sciences.

Criteria for award of Distinction The Scottish Baccalaureate in Social Sciences with Distinction will be awarded to candidates who achieve:
¨ Grade A in one Advanced Higher eligible Course
¨ Grade A in one other component
¨ Grade B or above in all other component
Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Humanities. However, entry will be beased on your other course choices in line with the information in the Course Description.
