Laboratory science is an opportunity for S5/6s to gain a N5 science qualification with a focus on practical skills. Continuously accessed, there is a mix of activities from all three sciences, catering to the interests of all pupils. During the course there will be an opportunity to work closely with local companies, developing work related skills and the opportunity to network with a variety of professionals.
They will develop the basic practical skills and knowledge needed for working in a laboratory: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions; and health and safety requirements. Practical skills in microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation will be developed.
Learners will develop the basic practical skills and knowledge needed for working in a laboratory: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions; and health and safety requirements. Practical skills in microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation will be a focus of the course.
Learners explore a variety of local, national and global industries and services and the career opportunities in science laboratories.
Learners will develop the basic practical laboratory skills: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions, and understanding and implementing the health and safety requirements for a safe working environment.
Learners will produce a plan to carry out a practical investigation to investigate an aim related to a scientific topic. This involves reporting results, conclusions and evaluations of the investigation.
Laboratory Science National 5 will provide you with knowledge and understanding of biology, chemistry and physics as well as practical laboratory skills in each area.
You will use a variety of scientific techniques incorporating a range of equipment which will aid and enhance your learning experience and development.
In addition, you will develop effective preparation skills and an awareness of health and safety required to carry out safe scientific work including
maintaining health and safety in a laboratory environment
measuring, weighing and preparing solutions for laboratory use
communicating laboratory information to authorised personnel under supervision
assisting with the preparation of solutions for laboratory use
preparation of solutions for use in the laboratory
development of a range of key skills that are aligned to industry standards
Everything you need to know before selecting this course
The National5 Laboratory Science will be assessed via a combination of practical and knowledge assessments under closed- and open-book assessment conditions.
Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Science. However, as a guide:
Learners should have achieved:
· National 4 or National 5 Mathematics or Applications of Maths, or SCQF level 4 or SCQF level 5 units in Mathematics
and one from:
