What will you learn?

The three units we will study are:

20th and 21st Century Music; In this unit the learner will:

Develop knowledge and understanding of 20th and 21st century styles and genres of music; understand how music technology has shaped the contemporary music scene; understand the aspects of the music industry; and develop listening skills - focusing on genres and styles.

Developing Music Technology Skills; In this unit the learner will:

Develop a range of skills and techniques relating to the creative use of music technology hardware and software to capture and manipulate audio; understand microphone use; dubbing; and increased editing skills.

 Music Technology Contexts; In this unit the learner will:

Gain experience in using music technology skills to capture and manipulate audio and learn how mix down to an audio master in appropriate file format, in a range of contexts.

Why do this course?

The course will provide pupils with the opportunity to develop creative skills, problem solving, experimenting, reflecting, researching, evaluating, organisation, planning, working independently and with others.

There will be opportunities to use and develop skills in ICT. 

What will you experience?

A wide range of learning and teaching strategies will be used such as whole class, paired and/or group work.  Work in class will be supported by classroom arrangements, ICT and specific web sites. Pupils will be involved in setting their own targets and evaluating their own as well as others progress.  Pupils will be expected to take responsibility for their learning.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher Faculty, Performing Arts.  However, as a guide: 

Assessment

Assignment    100 Marks Weighting 70%

The assignment tests the application of skills and knolwedge gained in class. Pupils will be asked to complete two tasks, each worth 50 marks and will require practical application of skills covered in class in a realistic setting. Pupils will plan and prepare for this prior to assessment.

Question Paper    40 Marks   Weighting 30%

This will test learners’ knowledge and understanding of technological concepts and music literacy.  Learners will demonstrate conceptual knowledge and understanding of music by responding to questions that relate to musical excerpts, music concepts and styles.  This will take place in May/June in a formal SQA examination.

Music technology leads towards many creative industries where an understand of how to apply complex technical knowledge in a live setting is required. This will include the music industry itself, other creative bodies such as the theatre industry or television production.
