SERVICES FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

Luxemburg-Casco School District works with families and students to ensure provision of an appropriate public education for students with disabilities. The District provides programming for all disability areas including autism, cognitive disabilities, specific learning disabilities, emotional behavioral disabilities and other health impairments. Programming is provided in the least restrictive environment. Consultation, screening and diagnostic services are available to any parent of a child, age three through 21 years, residing in the Luxemburg-Casco School District. SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES

Speech and Language Pathologists work with children who demonstrate significant delays in the acquisition or production of normal speech and/or language skills relative to chronological age and mental or physical ability. From the preschool through secondary level, the speech and language pathologists address problems which include: language development, communication skills, stuttering and articulation.

PRESCHOOL SERVICES

Luxemburg-Casco School District offers services only to qualifying three to five year olds. If you have a concern about your child's development, start by talking to your child's caregiver, doctor, or teacher. Upon request, the school district will screen any resident child to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate.

EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Services are available to children ages three through five who have been identified as having significant delays in development and have qualified for services through district assessments. If it has been determined that a child meets criteria for a disability, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is created by the IEP team. The IEP contains educational and adaptive goals specific to the ability level and needs of each child. The purpose is to provide children with early help through specialized educational intervention. The site of services will be determined by the IEP team based on the goals of each student. LEARNING DISABILITIES PROGRAM

Variation in the acquisition and mastery of basic academic skills can normally be expected among students at every grade level; however, students who have tested ability in the average or above average range and who still demonstrate significant delays in basic academic subjects, may qualify for specific learning disabilities educational services if their delay is not primarily attributable to a physical or health deficit, emotional behavioral or motivational factors.

EMOTIONAL/BEHAVIORAL DISABILITIES PROGRAM

Students who frequently demonstrate chronic and severe behaviors which significantly interfere with their learning may qualify under this area. Teachers who specialize in this area are available for the instruction of academic and affective skills, consultation with general education staff, and diagnostic evaluations.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES PROGRAM

Students with significantly below average general intellectual ability in conjunction with significant delays in academic skills and adaptive behavior may qualify under this disability category. Programs are available in integrated classes at the primary, intermediate, middle and high school levels within the district.

HEARING AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Students with significant physical limitations of their auditory and visual senses may qualify for special programs within the district. Severely impaired students may qualify for services in more specialized out-of-district programs.

OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPY

Occupational and physical therapy are only available on an as needed basis as a supportive or educational related service to those students qualifying for services under a disability area.

NOTICE OF CHILD FIND

The Luxemburg-Casco School District must locate, identify, and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. The school district has a special education screening program to locate and screen all children with suspected disabilities who are residents of the district and who have not graduated from high school. Upon request, the school district will screen any resident child who has not graduated from high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate. A request for a screening may be made by contacting the Director of Student Services at the number and address on this site.

A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to report the child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made. The referral must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A written referral of a child residing in the Luxemburg-Casco School District may be sent to the Director of Student Services at the address on this site.

Annually the district conducts developmental screening of preschool children. Each child's overall development in motor, communication, and social skills are observed at various play areas. The information is used to provide the parent with a profile of their child's current development and to provide suggestions for follow-up activities. Parents have access to information about community services available to them. The information from screening is also used to determine whether a child should be evaluated for a suspected disability. The Luxemburg-Casco School District sets child development dates annually and will be updated when set.
