First-of-its kind program in area will bring 9th-grade students into local businesses

LUXEMBURG, Wis. – The Luxemburg-Casco School District on Feb. 20 is launching the Career Readiness Business Tour, thought to be the first such program in Northeast Wisconsin to expose a full grade level to all employment opportunities. It complements the district’s existing Youth Apprenticeship program, now in its second year.

The Career Readiness Business Tour, open to freshman students, gives firsthand exposure to potential careers through tours and presentations on career and apprenticeship opportunities. Each participating student will visit five different businesses throughout Kewaunee and Brown counties over the course of the day.

“Our goal is to change the school experience by exposing the students to things they otherwise would not do,” says Mike Snowberry, director of learning services for the Luxemburg-Casco School District. “The more we let them know about, and experience, career options, they are better positioned to know what courses they should take during their final three years of high school.

“The district feels strongly that it must prepare students to be college, career and community ready. As part of that, we believe it is important we provide hands-on, authentic experiences that provide students with awareness and skills needed for whatever future pathway they choose. We are excited to offer this program.”

The 18 businesses and institutions participating in the Career Readiness Business Tour are:

Abts Bou-Matic

America’s Service Line

The first step in each student’s educational progression is this week’s Career Readiness Business Tour. At each stop on the tour, the company will introduce itself, discuss job opportunities and academic requirements of those positions, give forward-looking thoughts on the industry, answer questions from the students and provide a tour of the facility.

Following the Career Readiness Business Tour, Luxemburg-Casco students will have the opportunity to apply for the district’s Youth Apprenticeship program as they register for their junior-year courses.

The Luxemburg-Casco School District serves nearly 2,000 Northeast Wisconsin students annually through four schools: the primary (4K-2) and intermediate (3-6) schools, both in Luxemburg; the middle school (7-8) in Casco; and the high school (9-12) in Luxemburg. The district maintains a strong tradition of academic and extracurricular excellence while preparing students to thrive in a global community. Located between Green Bay, Door County and Lake Michigan, the educational community has been in existence since the early 1900s, with Luxemburg and Casco operating as separate districts until they merged in 1968.
