Project Update — August 2, 2019

L-C school buildings begin to take shape for start of new academic year

As the calendar turns to August and the 2019-20 school year nears, several aspects of the L-C referendum project are getting close to wrapping up. Meanwhile, other long-term parts of the work are continuing to advance with noticeable changes.

With road grading finished, curbs and gutters for the Marcks Lane bus drive started going in this week, and the pouring of asphalt will follow next Monday, August 5.

Nearby, wall footings of the new gymnasium are expected to be fully completed this week. In a few weeks, on August 19, the Spancrete panels for the main gym walls will begin to arrive on site.

The final bits of ground leveling around the High School took place this week. Pond soils were reused for the build-up around the gymnasium structure. At a future point in the project, these areas will be turned into grassy surfaces and landscaped areas.

Inside, the final wall studding in the basement went in this week. The plumbing within the locker room areas is fully complete and has been state approved, allowing for all of the interior concrete to be poured. Showers also have been roughed out.

The work has been able to stay to schedule with the cooperation of the project’s sub-contractors, according to Mike Frailing, the project manager from Nexus Solutions.

A state-of-the-art heating system, featuring four new boilers, soon will be going in. With four fully condensing boilers, it will be the most efficient heating set-up available.

At the Primary School, all of the masonry has been completed and looks fantastic. Additionally, all of the new windows needed are in, with window sills being put into place, while door frames were in the process of being installed this week.

The outline of the new, secured front entrance is now visible and on course to be completed for the start of the school year. The reception desk, along with the principal’s and nurse’s offices have been roughed out.

The recently added classrooms in the back of the Primary building are being prepped for use by students and teachers later this month. New whiteboards already are in place, and a deep cleaning of the rooms is taking place.

The speaker system within the Primary School was being installed, and tested, this week.

One recent development is that site preparations for the new Middle School building have begun. This week, trees were being cleared where the structure will go. Footings for the new Middle School structure will start being poured the latter part of August.
