Maple floor installation nearly complete as Gym construction enters final stages
A palpable excitement – along with sawdust – was in the air this week as one of the final aspects of the new Gymnasium, its maple floor, was being installed. Part of the Luxemburg-Casco School District referendum projects, the new gym is expected to be fully completed by the latter part of January 2020.
The adjacent new Wrestling Room also is in its final stages, with a similar completion date, while the structure of the new Middle School building continues to take shape.
An eight-person crew from Baseman Floors in Appleton had installed roughly three-quarters of the new Gym floor as of Dec. 20, with completion expected by year’s end. Once finished, the paints, stains and sealers will be applied. Two layers of ¾-inch plywood form the undersurface of the Gym floor. On top of the plywood, Grade 1 Maple is laid, giving L-C athletes a high-quality surface for competition.
After the five-day period needed for the paints, stains and sealers to dry, installation of the bleachers is expected to begin Jan. 8, 2020.
In other parts of the new Gym, all scoreboards and hoops have been installed. Painting of the walls and ceilings, along with duct work, also has been completed. Corcoran Glass this week was in the process of wrapping up its final installations.
“Van Den Heuvel Electric should be commended for the work it did in the gym,” says Nexus Solutions Project Manager Mike Frailing, who is overseeing work on the referendum projects. “From the wiring, to the scoreboards and lighting, they really have done a great job in helping us to get the gym open by moving their portion of the work along.” An epoxy flooring will be applied to the player locker rooms and public restrooms starting on Dec. 26. The restroom fixtures largely have been installed, and workers this week were putting in the restroom partitions. In the Gym Atrium and other nearby areas, all of the ceiling grids are in place. The majority of ceiling tiles will be dropped in on Dec. 26. With the Atrium’s entrance doors installed and other aspects moving along, the front vestibule is expected to be completed within the next 7-10 days.
The terrain in front of the Atrium entrance was being heated this week to get the frost out of the ground. A slab of concrete then will be poured, starting on Dec. 23, to provide a temporary entrance to the new Gymnasium until Spring.
In the new Wrestling Room, four-inch cove epoxy flooring was being applied this week by Industrial Protective Coatings of De Pere.
Application of three L-C Spartan head logos will follow, in addition to installation of the competition floor.
The exterior of the new Wrestling Room, interlocking wall panels, also largely has been completed.
Work on the new Middle School building continues, though it largely has moved to temperature-controlled tents for maximum efficiency. The masonry team of The Boldt Company now is putting the school’s interior walls up, and has completed roughly 50 percent of that work. Steel workers from SMA Construction are following behind the Boldt crew to put steel trusses for the roof into place. The initial trusses have been installed on the southeast corner of the building, and roof decking will come after that. All of the remaining roof materials are expected to arrive on site Dec. 23. Frailing is unfazed by the recent snow and cold temperatures in Northeast Wisconsin, and the effect they can have on the project. “It’s just another obstacle to jump over,” he says.
