Home stretch for completion of new L-C Gym, Wrestling Room is at hand

The home stretch of a major portion of the Luxemburg-Casco School District referendum projects – the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room at the north end of the high school – is here. Crews are feverishly working to complete a few final items in preparation for the district’s Jan. 26 dedication event and use by L-C students in the days that follow.

At the opposite end of the high school, a new stage of the new Middle School building begins this week.

The maple floor of the new Gymnasium has been 100 percent done since Jan. 7. All of the wood has been laid, and the painting and sealing is complete, including a large Spartan logo at midcourt. The primary remaining item to finish within the Gym is setup of the bleachers. There will be two sets of permanent bleachers and two movable sets, manufactured by Irwin Seating.A six-person crew is working 10-12 hours per day in order to complete the bleachers in advance of the dedication. It is anticipated that the bleachers will be fully set up several days prior to the event.A Hudl HD smart camera also will be added to provide the ability to film games and practices without a camera operator. In areas surrounding the new Gym, all of the ceilings have been dropped in and finishing touches are being done in the public restrooms. An epoxy floor has been added to the team locker rooms, leaving only the lockers themselves to be installed as the final item.

Workers from H.J. Martin and Son last week and this week were polishing the concrete in the Gym’s public corridors; a Spartan logo eventually will be part of it. All doors and hardware, including those of the front entrance, now are largely in place.

A temporary concrete slab was poured to offer Gym visitors a solid pathway into the facility. Later this year, the entire area in front of the Gym will be brought to its permanent grade and new concrete will be added.

Cabinetry – in areas such as the concession area of the Gym and offices/cubbies in the rear of the Wrestling Room – are in place, with only final touches needed.

Installation of the competition floor in the new Wrestling Room also continues. Members of the Wrestling Club, a parent booster group, helped to prepare the floor by putting the rubber support pieces onto the underside of the plywood surface. Having rubber to separate the plywood floor from the concrete underneath helps to mitigate concussions.

Epoxy flooring, including three Spartan head logos, has been completed in the entry and side viewing areas of the Wrestling Room.At the site of the new Middle School, with interior walls almost complete, pouring of the interior floors begins this week, starting with the science classrooms in the southeast corner of the structure. Ground preparations, including frost removal, were taking place last week.Roof trusses and decking of the new Middle School now are roughly 50 percent complete, according to Nexus Solutions Project Manager Mike Frailing, who is overseeing work on the L-C referendum projects. He additionally indicated that about one-eighth of the building’s rubber roof surface is done.A final state inspection of the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room is scheduled for the week of Jan. 20, Frailing says. “I can’t thank Melanie Parma of Somerville Architects enough,” he adds. “She has done a great job with all of the paperwork required for us to receive a temporary occupancy permit and to be ready for the state inspector.”
