Major community project gets underway in Luxemburg-Casco

Gymnasium and Fitness Center for residents, new Middle School are centerpieces of work

LUXEMBURG, Wis. – The Luxemburg-Casco School District – and the larger community it serves – broke ground today, May 10, on the major portion of improvement projects coming out of the referendum passed in April 2018.

“Four years ago, we asked the community what it wanted out of the school district,” says Luxemburg-Casco School District Superintendent Glenn Schlender. “The main two things we heard from residents was that they wanted a facilities plan including upgrades to the high school, along with a plan for relocating the middle school from Casco to Luxemburg.

“We asked their opinion, we listened, voters supported the plan, and now we’re delivering on it. We couldn’t be more excited to begin this project which will serve the entire Luxemburg-Casco community.”

The groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning to the left front of Luxemburg-Casco High School, located at 512 Center Drive in Luxemburg. Joining school officials and local VIPs were students representing areas which will benefit from the improvements: tech ed and family/consumer science students from the middle and high schools, along with high-school athletes. The pep band also was on hand.

Included within the project which broke ground on May 10 is:

• • A community fitness center with a wide selection of aerobic equipment and on-site changing facilities, more fully open to residents

  • A brand-new L-C Middle School (relocating students from the current Casco building for a unified campus in Luxemburg) with 20-plus classrooms serving seventh- and eighth-grade students

  • Completely new family and consumer science classrooms for middle- and high-school students

  • Two technical-education classrooms for middle-school students

  • Upgraded technical-education classrooms which utilize CNC machinery for high-school students

  • A modernized library, serving both the middle school and high school

  • A three-station gymnasium (twice the size of the current facility), allowing multiple teams to practice simultaneously

  • Expanded bleacher seating in the gym, increasing capacity for graduation and athletic events

  • New team locker rooms

  • Upgraded concessions

  • The first-ever school store

  • An upgraded kitchen facility with the ability to handle the addition of middle-school students

  • A new main office for the high school with a “secure entrance” to the exterior

“As a rural district, there is tremendous community pride in our school facilities,” adds Schlender. “People are genuinely excited to see this project come to fruition.”

Along with Schlender, School Board President Mike Driedric and Jeff Mangan of Nexus Solutions spoke as part of a short program. The groundbreaking ceremony followed, with student representatives participating.

The Luxemburg-Casco School District undertook a long-range facilities plan in the spring of 2015. Following engagement with the local community, two referendum questions were put before voters in April 2018; both passed.

Work originating out of the $27.8-million referendum began in October 2018 with construction of a new, secure main entrance for the Primary School. A portion of the improvements at the high school, including the gymnasium and related facilities, will be available at some point during the next school year (2019-20).

The new Middle School in Luxemburg is expected to be ready for use in the 2020-21 academic year.
