New Gymnasium and Wrestling Room reach advanced stages of construction
Approaching the end of the first month of the school year, progress on the Luxemburg-Casco School District referendum projects continues on both the north and south sides of the High School. To the north, work on the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room is reaching advanced stages, while on the south side the new Middle School building is starting to take shape.
One of the most noticeable recent developments was the placement of the final two Spancrete® panels on the west side of the new Gymnasium on Sept. 23, closing off the structure save for its doorways. At that point all of the steel braces, which were supporting the Spancrete® panels prior to the roof installation, had been removed.
Within the Gym’s interior, electric, plumbing and HVAC is in the process of being stubbed in. Windows and other planned elements also are being cut into the Spancrete® panels at this time.
Plans call for the concrete floor of the new Gymnasium to be poured on Sept. 30, weather permitting. The pour is expected to take roughly two days, after which the concrete needs approximately one week to cure. Testing then is done to ensure a quality undersurface.
To the north, the outline of the new Wrestling Room quickly is taking shape. All of the roof trusses and decking are in place, and the roof itself will be installed the week of Sept. 30.
The last of the steel studs for the Wrestling Room side walls were going in this week, followed by wood backing. Installation of the special, interlocking exterior panels will start in early October.
Inside the Wrestling Room, all of the concrete floor has been poured. A large portion of it is recessed in order to accommodate eventual installation of a concussion-proof floor.
Nexus Solutions Project Manager Mike Frailing has been pleased with local contractor M.R. Neubert Construction, which is overseeing erection of the Wrestling Room. “Mike Neubert and his team have been a good, quality partner to build with,” says Frailing. “They have exceeded our expectations.”
Nearby, concrete was freshly poured this week in the shipping and receiving area at the back of the Gym and Wrestling Room.
Inside the High School, one of the four new boilers is scheduled to be running – and producing heat – by Oct. 1.
At the far south end of the work site, block walls abutting the High School are being installed as part of the new Middle School construction.
Crews continue to work on the footings and frost walls for the Middle School. Those on the east side, along with those in the southeast corner where the Science rooms will be located, have been poured. Once pouring is completed in an area, nearby surfaces are backfilled and leveled out for safety purposes and to eliminate areas where water can collect.
In spite of recent rains which have necessitated frequent drying steps to the Middle School work site, the goal remains to have all of the footings, frost walls and the roof in place by the end of November.
Frailing overall is pleased with the progress of the project. He shared that on Sept. 18 there had been a full state inspection of the entire job site, which was passed.
