New Middle School takes shape while Gym and Wrestling Room get enclosed
With winter’s descent onto Northeast Wisconsin, work on the Luxemburg-Casco School District referendum projects continues with the goal of enclosing portions of the structures wherever possible. Both the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room largely are sealed up.
Over on the south side of the construction site, walls for the new Middle School are going up at a rapid pace. Roof trusses and steel decking for the structure will follow at the earliest date possible.
Following the pouring of the concrete floor within the new Gymnasium in early October, the concrete passed PSI strength tests after a week of curing. This milestone allowed contractors to begin utilizing lifts on the floor to perform their work.
In the Gym’s upper reaches, contractors are installing electrical conduit and duct work. The western half of the duct work was complete as the calendar turned to November, with the eastern portion soon to follow.
The roof for the Gymnasium was put on during the latter part of October. It first was sealed, then six inches of insulation was put into place, followed by installation of a rubber membrane. An air handler, along with a new chiller, will be lifted onto the roof by the end of November.
The main entrance for the new Gymnasium is also starting to take shape. Welding of its canopy wrapped up this week. Doors and glass soon will follow to get it enclosed before winter’s harshest weather takes hold.
In the nearby Wrestling Room, both the plywood backing and drywall have been installed. Roughly 80 percent of the electrical conduit and 65 percent of the HVAC work are complete.
Meanwhile, work on the new Middle School continues feverishly. All exterior footings were completed approximately two weeks ago. Roughly 85 percent of the interior footings have been poured.
CMU walls of the Middle School are being formed through the placement of concrete blocks. At this point the majority of the outer walls are up, while the outline of specific classrooms is beginning to take shape with some inner walls.
The final week of October, fresh dirt was being hauled in to provide quality backfill right up to all of the exterior footings. Once complete, the interior surface will be evened out and readied for the eventual concrete pour.
All soils are being tested on a regular basis by a third-party tester, Joe Bittner of American Engineering Testing, to ensure a quality surface capable of withstanding building.
With the rainy weather during the latter half of October, Nexus Solutions Project Manager Mike Frailing is appreciative of the hard work he has seen from the contractors working on the Middle School. “SMA and Boldt have done a great job to get the main structure up,” he says. “They have gotten us back to the schedule following all of the rain we had.”
The water and sewer mains for the new Middle School are in and ready for eventual use.
